1919 OHS Yearbook

Boys' Basketball

Robert Reed (Bob), was the captain of this year's forwards and a "pop" shot. But few guards are able to keep track of him and Bob is generally found to be in the clear when a ready pass is needed. He has captained the team through a successful season and has played full time in every game. Bob is a real sportsman and always gets along well with his opponents. The school should be sure of a successful season with a man of two years' experience back with them for the next year.

George Vermillion (Red), has been our center for the last three years, and has also been shifted to guard the forward in several occasions where he gets along equally as well. He is an old man at the game and knows it from "A to Z". He can relate many a tale of the fame of O.H.S. in former seasons where he played as a boy, among men twice his size. Red plays a wonderful floor game and brings the stands to their feet time after time by a long shot from center when the team is in a tight place. George will be back again next year ready to take his old stand in the center of the floor where but few outclass him.

Kenneth Hall (Cuddy) is a forward of this year's team, and altho he is among the midget class, he has displayed some real basketball ability. It was only after several games at the starting of the season that he was picked from among the fans and placed in the hall of fame. He plays a good game on the floor and it is only after a few minutes play until his guard takes up his position at the defensive to await the arrival of his clever opponent who he has been trying to follow. Kenneth is a Sophomore this year and will be one of the O.H.S. stars next year.

Leslie Beck (Fleet-foot), is an A number one forward of this year's team and has at times showed some real class as a basketball player. He started this season as a forward and played a good game on the floor, showing exceptional ability in his clear passes. However, through misfortune his health went back and he did not play so well until later in the season, again showing great ability as a basketball player. Leslie has been with the team for two seasons and he will be missed next year when he goes out with the SENIORS.

Albert Reed (Icabod), is a center of this year's team and is known among all basketeers as the man who gets the tip-off. Icabod plays a good game at all times and is exceedingly good on shots from the side line. He has played in a majority of the games in the last two seasons and has won himself a reputation in O.H.S. Albert is in the SENIOR CLASS this year and will be missed when the team organizes next season.

Lee Goldsmith (Goldie), is a guard of this year's team and a player who is always thought of or who may be classed among the midgets. He has shown real ability in holding his opponents down to a low score and has been a great factor of the team this year. He is especially strong on intercepting passes and is always in the game. Goldie takes his stand near the basket and but few men ever get through. He will be back again next year and as strong as ever.

Walter Jolly (Buck), is a forward of this season who has developed from the Freshman class. Although he did nothing in the first games, he finally got a little better at the last, and in an emergency case filled in. Although a midget, he managed to pile up a score for O.H.S. while closely guarded by his opponents. Buck will probably develop into a wonderful player in the coming seasons, and will win a name for O.H.S.

Clifford Warner (Tank), is a guard on this year's, and has played in several games at the close of the season. He has been a great help to the squad in developing a team by coming out to practice and has become a good player who will probably be strong next season. Tank played a strong defensive game and always holds his opponent to a low score.

Floyd Warner (Warner), is a guard of this season's team and was the most potent factor in this year's aggregation. As an aggressive guard he is almost without equal and he plays the floor to a great advantage. He made a number of clever goals in this last season, besides holding the opposing forwards down to very few goals. Although this is Warner's first year in the O.H.S. team, when he graduates with the Seniors one of the best guards the school has ever had will leave. He was awarded honorable mention as a guard at the tournament at Baker.
