to our mascot
We've never known of
any of the classes before having a mascot, but none of them
were fortunate enough to have a little baby boy in their
class family as we have. David Wayne Axton, the
baby son of Supt. Axton, is the favored mascot of the Class
of 1919. Though Wayne is young yet to appreciate the genius
and pep of the class of 1919, we know that as he grows older
the fact that he was the mascot of our class will inspire
him to do great things for O.H.S. in the future. The Y.W.C.A. of our
high school was organized in the spring of 1917 thru the
efforts of the lady faculty members and some of the high
school girls. Since then, the
organization has held its regular meetings and the girls
have shown their interest in its activities. This year was
an eventful year for our high school girls, for Miss Slack,
the Students' Secretary of the West Central District,
visited us and started us toward affiliation. Soon afterward
we drew up a constitution which has been sent to the central
office so that before our school year closes we hope to
receive our charter. Under the constitution the officers
are: Helen Brian, President; Margaret Harvey,
Vice-President; Kathryn Beckley, Secretary; Lucille Jackson,
Treasurer. This year when the
Y.W.C.A. reorganized, the Y.M.C.A. also started over again.
Under the direction of the faculty men they have become a
live organization. As the Y.M. principle (spirit, mind,
body) signifies, the boys have devotional meetings, debating
teams and also devote much time to physical development for
they spend evenings boxing, playing volley ball and other
popular sports. The first officers since organization were:
Floyd Warner, President; Gene Bush, Vice-President; R. Reed,
Secretary; Clifford Warner, Treasurer. For the first time in
many years, Osawatomie had a lecture course this winter. It
was seriously handicapped in the beginning from the fact
that the "flu" quarantine prevented the first number being
given. Yet, despite this, the people have shown they
appreciated it. We all know Osawatomie
is interested or should be interested in education. As the
lecture course is one of the most helpful things toward
better education, it should be boosted by your patronage for
we are to have a course of seven numbers next
year.
