Services for Garrett J. Dempsey, Jr., who died early Saturday morning, September 6, 1980, were held on Tuesday, September 9, 1980, at St. Philip Neri Church in Osawatomie. Father S. J. Weitharn officiated. Mr. Dempsey, 28, of 500 12th Street, was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Johnson County just north of Spring Hill.

Garrett was born December 3, 1951 in Paola and was the son of Garret J. Dempsey, Sr. and Marjorie Mullins Dempsey. Mr. Dempsey grew up on a farm east of Osawatomie. He was a lifelong area resident and a 1969 graduate of Osawatomie High School. He was a former 4-H member and was active in sports, particularly the Men's Softball League. He was a member of St. Philip Neri Church and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 921.

On February 12, 1972, he was married to Susan Sumrall in Osawatomie. They were parents of four daughters and their fifth child is expected in a few months.

Mr. Dempsey had been employed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad for the past 10 years and was a signal test foreman at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Susan, and the daughters, Mariann Lynn, Jamie Suzann, Kathleen Denise, and Natalie Elizabeth, all of the home; his mother, Mrs. Marjorie Dempsey, Osawatomie; and four sisters, Rose Mary Branson and Catherine Montgomery, both of Osawatomie, Anna Workman of Olathe, and Helen Ogden of Westerville, Ohio.

Services were under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery in Paola.

Honorary pallbearers were Mike Hermreck, David Klawonn, Bill McKey, Chester Pennock, James Jordan, Mike Weaver, Dave Brown, Morris Kane, Jack Slayman, Dan Peterson, Bill Jackson and Larry Sinner. Active pallbearers were George Pretz, Mike Lombard, Charles Pinneo, Leo Day, Dennis Sheehan and David Paddock.

A memorial trust fund in Mr. Dempsey's name has been established for his children at First National Bank.
