MARILYN ELAINE COOK WINEGAR

SEPTEMBER 14, 1951 - JANUARY 14, 2004

Marilyn Elaine Winegar, 52, lifelong Osawatomie resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at her home.

She was born Sept. 14, 1951, in Osawatomie, the daughter of Edwin and Lorene Haase Cook. She grew up in Osawatomie, attended local schools and graduated in 1969 from Osawatomie High School. She continued her education at Pittsburg State University and then earned a degree in teaching in 1987 from Emporia State University.

She and Glen Steven Winegar were married Dec. 23, 1971. They lived in Osawatomie and became the parents of two daughters.

Mrs. Winegar taught at the elementary-school level in Osawatomie USD 367.

She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Teachers Society, where she had served as president and vice president. She had also been a member of the Osawatomie National Education Association. In 2002, she was honored as Osawatomie Teacher of the Year.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Osawatomie.

One of her favorite hobbies was painting. Most of all, she enjoyed the time she spent with her grandsons and other family members. She served as a girls' softball coach in the community for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Steven Winegar of the home; her parents, Edwin and Lorene Cook of Osawatomie; two daughters, Lisa Farmer and Jamie Anderson, both of Paola; a sister, JoAnn Newell of Olathe; a brother, Charles Cook of Gardner; and two grandsons.

Services were Saturday at Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie, followed by burial in Osawatomie Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bill Cook, Brian Cook, Mark Davis, Jim Keele, Jerry Burgoon, Gary Troutman and Roger Zimmerman.

Memorials may be made to the church or the Osawatomie High School scholarship fund.
