Craig S. Powell, 55, Osawatomie, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, in Cancun, Mexico.

He was born Sept. 12, 1950, the son of James Clarence and Marjorie Fitzgerald Powell. He grew up in Osawatomie and was a 1968 graduate of Osawatomie High School. After graduating from Kansas State University, he earned his law degree from Washburn University on May 18, 1974. He was admitted to practice before the Kansas Supreme Court on Sept. 13, 1974, and was admitted and qualified as an attorney and counselor by the U.S. Supreme Court on Nov. 14, 1974.

He established a law office in Osawatomie and practiced by himself for a short time before joining Willis H. McQueary. The law firm of McQueary and Powell was soon established and continued until early 2004.

Mr. Powell took pride in the fact that he never lost a case before the Kansas Supreme Court or an appeal during his nearly three decades of law practice.He was appointed assistant attorney for the city of Osawatomie in October 1974, became city attorney in September 1980 and served until his retirement on June 1, 2003. He was attorney for Osawatomie USD 367 for about two decades and also served from time to time as attorney for local financial institutions.

Mr. Powell was a member of a number of civic organizations including the Osawatomie Chamber of Commerce and the Osawatomie Lions Club during his lifetime. He also served on the board of directors and as president of Greater Osawatomie Inc., a community development corporation.

He and Cathy S. Ricketts were married and they became the parents of two sons. On Jan. 12, 2001, he and Carolyn Purvis were married.

His parents both preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Powell of Osawatomie; his two sons, Dustin J. Powell and Brett A. Powell; and a sister, Diana Vincent Weiss of Wisdom, Mont.

Services are pending and will be announced as soon as they are made.

Memorials may be made in his name to the Osawatomie High School Scholarship Fund.
