MARY SPENCER DUNBAR

CLASS OF 1962

JULY 15, 1944 - AUGUST 29, 2000

Mary L. Dunbar, 56, Winfield, died August 29, 2000, in the Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado.

She was born July 15, 1944, in Kansas City, MO, one of four daughters of Jesse J. and Frances E. Wheeler Spencer. The family moved to Osawatomie when she was a child and she attended local school, graduating from Osawatomie High School with the Class of 1962.

After graduating, she went to work for the Osawatomie State Hospital.

She and Charles R. Dunbar were married October 2, 1976 in the First Christian Church in Winfield, They made their home in Winfield.

Mrs. Dunbar was employed by the Winfield State Hospital before her retirement in 1997. She had been in the employment of the State of Kansas for 32 years.

While employed by Winfield State Hospital, she graduated from Butler County Community College as a licensed practical nurse.

In 1998, she joined the staff at the El Dorado Correctional facility.

Mrs. Dunbar was a member of the First Christian Church in Winfield and was on the Kansas State Nursing Board for eight years. She helped with the Bluegrass Festival from 1982 until 1997 and was involved with the Kansas State Mental Health Aides Association.

She and her husband loved to travel. She had been on a vacation every year for the past 24 years. They were avid NASCAR fans and followed the circuit.

Her mother preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Charles, of the home; a son, Charles L. Dunbar of Winfield; three sisters, Barbara Zuel and Florence Harclerode of Osawatomie and Cheryl York of Paola; and one granddaughter.

Services were at Miles Funeral Home with burial in Union Cemetery, both in Winfield.

Memorials were to the church.
