SEMTEMBER 11, 1944 - MARCH 6, 2015

John R. Spellman, 70, was born on September 11, 1944 in Madison, South Dakota to Gladys and Earl Spellman. John was raised in Osawatomie, Ks and graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1962; he attended Fort Scott Community College after being awarded a football scholarship. He joined the Navy in 1963 and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. Later, John found a career as a machinist at Marley Cooling Tower in Olathe, Ks. He was a devout Catholic, attending catholic school at St. Philips in Osawatomie as a child and was a member of St. Margaret’s Perish in Lee’s Summit, Mo in his later years.

“JS” was known by all for his outgoing personality, fondness of food, his undying love for the Kansas City Chiefs, and his EPIC story telling ability. John was most proud of being a father, grandfather, and uncle. John lived a majority of his life in Osawatomie but, later, moved to Lake Lotawana to be closer to his family. Throughout his life, he made many friends and brightened many lives.

After fiercely fighting several ailments, John passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on March 6, 2015. John is survived by his daughter, Casey (Spellman) McClain; granddaughter, Regan Martinez; family, friends, and his beloved canine companion… all who he adored. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and Earl; and two brothers, Mike and Steve.

A celebration of his life is scheduled for Friday, March 13th at 11:00 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Osawatomie; military honors will follow at Osawatomie Cemetery at 12:30; with a reception to follow at the church. All are welcome to attend and remember his life; we will be wearing red in honor of his love for the Chiefs.
