CLASS OF 1961 MAY 22, 1942 - MARCH 17, 1974 John "Pee Wee" Dial was killed in an automobile accident in Osawatomie on March 17, 1974. He was born May 22, 1942 in Paragould, Ark. and was a son of Mervin L. and Agnes Hendrix Dial. He was preceded in death by his mother. The family moved to Osawatomie in 1949. Mr. Dial attended local schools where he was active in band and sports. He was a 1961 graduate of Osawatomie High. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Dial returned to Osawatomie. He was operating Pee Wee's Hometowner, 712 Sixth St., at the time of his death. In October of 1966, he was married. Three children were born to the couple. Mr. Dial was a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 3712, American Legion Post 156, and the Eagles Club of Paola. Survivors include his children, Brian Dean, Gwendolyn Sue and Rebecca Jane; his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Mervin L. Dial, Osawatomie; two brothers, Ray Dial, Osawatomie, and Donald Dial, Lathrop, Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. Bobbie Whitney, Independence, Mo. Mrs. Jeris Coffelt, Osawatomie, and Mrs. Jo Ann Cochrane, Prairie Village; three half-brothers, Danny, Ricky and David Dial, all of Osawatomie; and three half-sisters, Mrs. Debra Ellsworth, and Miss Jane Dial, both of Osawatomie, and Mrs. Jackie Hauber, Lawrence. The Rev. Robert Thompson officiated at services held March 20 in Birchard Chapel. Mrs. Hugh Phares provided organ selections and Mrs. Robert Thompson was the soloist. Pallbearers were Bill Birchard, David Arbogast, Gary Spears, James Caylor, Ray Arrington and Donald Needham. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery with military services at graveside. |
