RICHARD WAYNE BUCHANAN

Richard Wayne Buchanan, 59, Huntington Beach, Calif., former resident of Osawatomie, died July 6, 2001 in the Heavenly Home Care Facility in Apple Valley, Calif.

He was born May 28, 1942, in Paola, the son of John Harold and Gladys Price Suddarth Buchanan. He grew up in Osawatomie and was a 1960 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

He received a bachelor of arts degree in 1964 from Emporia State University and earned his law degree in 1967 from the University of Kansas School of Law.

After his graduation he worked in the trust department in a Wichita bank for two years. He then moved to Orange County, Calif., and opened a private law practice in Huntington Beach in 1969.

His education continued and he attended Golden West of San Francisco Orange County Campus and received a master of taxation degree in 1982. He was taking courses to learn the Spanish language.

His mother made her home with him from 1986 until her death in 1998. His final days were spent with his sister, first on a cruise, then in her care.

He was a member of the Sea Cliff Country Club in Huntington Beach where he played golf every Sunday and at any other time he could. One of his great joys was his dogs, Oscar and Felix.

Both his parents preceded him in death.

Survivors include his sister, Patricia Mason of Apple Valley, and three nephews.

Services were held in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Cremation followed the service and burial of the cremains was in Osawatomie Cemetery.

Memorials were made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
