Services for Estel Irl Williams, retired Osawatomie chief of police, of 1126 Fourth St., Osawatomie, were held last Wednesday in the United Methodist Church. Mr. Williams, 51, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his home March 16, 1981.

He was born October 26, 1929, in Kincaid. His parents were Daniel and Rosie Mae Hearn Williams. He married Ruth Elice Barkley June 30, 1951, in Osawatomie. They were parents of three children.

Starting with the second grade, Mr. Williams attended Osawatomie schools. He graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1947. After his graduation, he worked with his father in the trucking business until entering the U. S. Air Force in 1948. After his discharge in September 1952, he worked in trucking again before going to work for Missouri Pacific Railroad as a machinist. Later, he worked for the Kansas State Highway Commission.

In August 1959, he began a career with the Osawatomie Police Department that was to span a period of 16 years. Eight of those years, he held the position of chief of police. In September 1964, he was shot and seriously injured while on duty when he attempted to intervene in a family disturbance. He retired February 26, 1975, because of failing health.

Mr. Williams was a member of the United Methodist Church of Osawatomie; Osage Valley Lodge No. 24, A.F. & A. M., where he served as master; Kansas Peace Officers Association; International Association of Chief of Police; and American Legion Post No. 156, Paola.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of the home; two daughters, Shirley Law, Osawatomie, and Gayle Williams, of the home; and a son, Dan Williams, Osawatomie.

The Rev. Eugene Riley and the Rev. Glenn Layton, Jr. officiated at the services. Mrs. Hugh Phares provided organ selections. Pallbearers were Thomas Crozier, John Cragg, Sam Farley, William Fisher, Stan O'Berg, Ed Tessier, Ted Lewis and Lloyd Goodeyon. Masonic services were held in the church with military services at the graveside in Osawatomie Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home.

An Estel Williams Memorial Fund was established at the Osawatomie Department of Public Safety.
