CHESTER C. PENNOCK

CLASS OF 1947

AUGUST 21, 1929 - APRIL 5, 1980

Chester C. Pennock, 50, of Osawatomie, died Saturday, April 5, 1980. The son of Chester William and Ruth Naomi Pennock, he was born Aug. 21, 1929 in Osawatomie.

He attended the Osawatomie schools, graduating in 1947. He continued his education at the University of Kansas at Lawrence, graduating in 1951 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

Aug. 19 1951, he was united in marriage to Joyce A. Heckart at the First Christian Church in Osawatomie.

Following his graduation from college Mr. Pennock was employed as assistant business manager at the Osawatomie Stat Hospital for two years. He resigned that position to attend the Associate Field Artillery Battery Officers' Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

They returned to Osawatomie in October of 1953, where he accepted the position as assistant secretary-treasurer of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association.

Mr. Pennock continued his career at First Federal advancing to secretary-treasurer in 1958, executive vice president and managing officer in 1960 and president in 1964, the position he held at the time of his death.

Mr. Penock attended the University of Indiana at Bloomington in the summers of 1961, 1962 and 1963, and graduated from the Graduate School of Savings and Loans in August 1963.

He joined Battery C, 127th Field Artillery Battalion of the Kansas Army National Guard, Nov. 24, 1950 in Paola. In November of 1957 he was promoted to battery commander. He was reassigned in October 1962 to the 127th Artillery at Ottawa where he later became battalion commander.

During his years with the National Guard he was commissioned second lieutenant, first lieutenant, captain, major and lieutenant colonel. His last assignment was state motor officer with Headquarters and Headquarers Detachment in Topeka.

Mr. Pennock was a member of the First Christian Church. He was active in many community and civic activities and organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, Osage Valley Lodge No. 24, IOOF Beagle Lodge. No. 434, BPOE No. 921, the library board, city recreation commission, city planning commission, the executive and insurance committees of the Kansas Savings and Loan League and The League Institute.

He was a life member of both Kansas and Indiana Universities, American Savings and Loan Institutes, a member of the Thesis Review Board of the Graduate School of Savings and Loans, the executive committee and president of the National Guard Association of Kansas, and was a trustee of the Savings Association Retirement Fund.

Mr. Pennock also worked with the youth through Cub Scouts, both Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and Junior League football.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Joyce Pennock; two sons, Chester William Pennock and Robert Lynn Pennock; a daughter, Miss Christine Ann Pennock; his granddaughter, Andrea Lynn; his mother, Mrs. Ruth Cockran; a sister, Mrs. Margret Thompson, Independence, and a brother, Gene Pennock, Sula, Montana.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the First Christian Church, with the Rev. Almon Martin officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Martin and Fred Longshore.

Active pallbearers were Chuck Hope, Wayne Holmes, Glenn Ricketts, Webster Hawkins, Galen Graham, and Clifford Stephens. Honorary pallbearers were Leon Mahoney, Raymond Waggoner, Merle Stone, Bob Hogan, Rex Kiser, William Eddy, Doug Hagadorn, Ernest Swenson, Gordon Schrader, Donald Biggs, Richard Dickson, Jim Piggott, Paul Hill, Raymond Bowers, Lloyd Goodeyon, William Butler, Jr. and Jim Breckenridge.

Burial was in the Osawatomie Cemetery under the direction of the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home..
