DORIS JUNE CONKLIN HELD

OCTOBER 22, 1929 - JULY 21, 2001

Doris June Held, 71, Osawatomie, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at her home after an extended illness.

She was born Oct. 22, 1929, in Osawatomie, the second of the three children of E.L. and Velma L. Hartford Conklin. She was a 1947 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

While still in her teens, she began working as a secretary for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. She worked in Osawatomie, St. Louis, Mo., Little Rock, Ark., and Houston; Texas, before she retired in 1972.

She returned to Osawatomie and then worked for United Telephone Co., King Radio, Emerson Electric and Sprint. Her second retirement was in 1994.

She and Larry J. Held were married, and they became the parents of two children. Their marriage ended in divorce.

She was married to Jerry C: Burgess in November 1993 in Overland Park.

Her memberships included the First Christian Church and National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, both of Osawatomie. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, International Order of Job's Daughters of Osawatomie and Heartland Art Guild of Paola

Those preceding her in death were a brother, Clayton Conklin, and a sister, Dorothy Jean Conklin, who died in infancy.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Burgess of the home; a son, Richard Held of Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Jolene Huston of Lake Quivira, Kan.; and one grandson.

Viewing was after 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. A visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Osawatomie Cemetery.
