ROBERTA "BERT'" DAY WOLKEN

JANUARY 9, 1929 - SEPTEMBER 24, 2004

Roberta Wolken, 75, an Osawatomie native, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in Oklahoma City, Okla., after an extended illness.

Bert, as she was more commonly known, was born Jan. 9, 1929, in Osawatomie, the daughter of Robert and Ruby Day. She graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1946.

An elopement in 1948 led to a 49-year marriage to her husband, Ambrose "Brose" J. Wolken. They were longtime residents of Osawatomie, where her husband established Peck-Wolken Chevrolet and later Osawatomie Motors Ford dealership. They retired to Grove, Okla., in 1980 after a fire closed Osawatomie Motors.

Mrs. Wolken loved life at Grand Lake and spent her time boating, fishing, gardening, cooking and playing cards at any opportunity.

She and her husband were founding members of Grace Presbyterian Church in Grove and she often played the organ for services. She served as chaplain of P.E.O. and was a dedicated member of several bridge clubs. Her grandchildren provided her greatest source of entertainment.

While living in Osawatomie, she was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and played the piano for Sunday school for many years.

Others preceding her in death were two sisters, Carolee and Ruth Day, and two granddaughters, Keri Jane and Amy Jill Fixley.

Surviving are her daughter, Jane Elliott of Oklahoma City; a son, Robert Wolken of Littleton, Colo.; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held September 27th, 2004 at the Osawatomie Cemetery under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home of Osawatomie.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Osawatomie; Grace Presbyterian Church, 400 S. Main St., Grove, OK 74344; or the Endowment Fund of the Metropolitan Library System, 300 Park Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73102.
