ROSEMARY YOCUM

CLASS OF 1945

 NOVEMBER 26, 1927 - APRIL 24, 1945

Rosemary Yocum, 17, Osawatomie high school senior and daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Ross Yocum, committed suicide in her home Tuesday morning between 9 and 10 o'clock. She had shot herself through the right temple, the bullet coming from a .22 rifle. She was fully attired and was in the living room of the home in Osawatomie. Her mother, who had been working at SOW found the body when she returned from work about 10 o'clock. Mr. Yocum works in the Safeway store in Osawatomie. Dr. W. L. Speer, coroner, pronounced the act a plain case of suicide

Disappointment over the breaking up of a school romance is said to have prompted the act. However, Rosemary and other members of the family had been greatly depressed since receiving word of the death of her brother, Pvt. Ralph William Yocum, who was killed in action in Italy Oct. 14, 1944. Besides the parents she is survived by a sister, Mrs. Donald O. Nutt of Osawatomie, and two brothers, Wayne Yocum of Omaha, Nebr., and James Yocum of Eugene, Ore. Rosemary was born in Osawatomie Nov. 26, 1927. She was in her classroom Monday but did not go to school Tuesday morning, although she made telephone calls before committing her rash act. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Max Barnes, will be in the Osawatomie Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and burial will be in the New Osawatomie cemetery.
