DONALD FRANK PLATT

CLASS OF 1945

Donald Frank Platt, 75, longtime Osawatomie resident and retired businessman, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

He was born March 22, 1927, in Blue Mound and was one of the four children of Herbert Nathan and Rachel Ellen Hood Platt. His family moved in 1934 to Osawatomie, where he attended school. He was a 1945 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on March 10, 1945, and served during World War II until he was discharged in October 1945. His second tour of duty was from January 1948 until December 1952. From December 1950 until December 1951, he was stationed in South Korea and participated in action against enemy forces during the Korean War.

Mr. Platt returned to Osawatomie in 1952 and began working for Gas Service Co. He went to work in 1959 at First Federal Savings and Loan in Osawatomie. During the next 15 years, he became vice president and was a loan officer. He made the decision in 1977 to start his own business and opened Platt Realty in Osawatomie. He remained there until selling the business and retiring in 1991.

He and Jackie Jean Day were married June 7, 1953, in Missouri Valley, Iowa. They lived in Osawatomie and became the parents of three children.

Mr. Platt was an active member of his community. He served on the board of education for the Osawatomie school district during the time the new high school was built. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Hanlin-Kelly Post No. 2258 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, John Hinkle Post No. 204, the Chamber of Commerce and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 921, all of Osawatomie. He had served as state president of the Kansas Savings and Loan League and as president of the Osawatomie Alumni Association.

Those preceding him in death were a brother and a sister.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie Platt of the home; his daughter, Cheryl Grosdidier of Baldwin City; his two sons, David Platt of Shawnee and Mark Platt of Fayetteville, Ga.; a sister, Patty Waggoner of Barnhart, Mo.; and eight grandchildren.

Services were today (Monday) at the church. Pallbearers were E.L. Thomas, Tom Speck, Jim Pritchard, Bill Butler, Bill Coffelt and Ernest L. Swenson. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements were cared for by Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home of Osawatomie.
