FLOYD 'JIGGS' CORTNER

Floyd Junior "Jiggs" Cortner, 81, Overland Park, Kan., passed away Thursday, January 22, 2009, at his home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf. Friends may call on the family 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the chapel. Burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens.

Floyd was born May 1, 1927, in Osawatomie, Kan., to John Floyd and Hazel Irene (Steele) Cortner.

After serving as a Seabee in the Navy during WWII, he graduated from Pittsburg State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He taught school and coached in Nashville, Kan., for one year before returning to Kansas City and starting at General Motors-Fairfax where he worked for over 40 years. Floyd was also a member of the Paola Masonic Lodge for over 50 years.

He was preceded in death by wife, Lillie Marie (Whitaker) Cortner.

Survivors include his daughter, Marlese Ann Cortner Moreno and her husband, Domingo Moreno; two granddaughters, Lillie Josefina Moreno and Mary Elizabeth Moreno; sister, Georgie Wright; three nephews, Stephen Wright, (Kathy), and David Whitaker (Ann); two nieces, Nancy (Wright) Darling (Gary), and Barbara (Whitaker) Lyman (Richard) and several great nieces and nephews.
