RICHARD JAMES WHITNEY

AUGUST 25, 1926 - DECEMBER 29, 1967

Services were held Monday afternoon at the United Presbyterian Church for Richard James Whitney, 41, of Independence, Mo., a former resident of Osawatomie.

Whitney was killed late Friday afternoon, Dec. 29, 1967, in a headon crash at the intersection of 94th St. and Kay Drive west of Kansas City, Kan. in Wyandotte County. A civilian employee of the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers, Whitney was driving an army vehicle at the time of the mishap.

Two Edwardsville women were also killed in the crash.

Whitney was born Aug. 25, 1926 in Osawatomie. He attended school here and was graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1944. Her served two years in the U.S. Navy and married Alice Palmer on April 20, 1946.

Employed for a time as a carman and brakeman for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, Whitney also worked for the U.S. Post Office, Swift & Co., Taylor Forge Co., and in recent years, the Army Corps of Engineers.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and Independence, Mo. Masonic Lodge No.76.

Preceding him in death was his father, Wallace Whitney, in 1945.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, of the home; four children, Mrs. Elenora Fisher, Shawnee Mission, Mrs. Anita Faye Cox, Kansas City, Kan., Wallace James Whitney and Richard Eugene Whitney of the home; his mother, Ethel Whitney, Osawatomie; seven brothers and sisters, Sewell Whitney, Kansas City, Kan., Mrs. C.R.Kester, Osawatomie, Wallace Whitney, St. Joseph, Mo., Everett Whitney, Osawatomie, Mrs. Wayne Diediker, Osawatomie, Mrs. LaVern Diediker, Topeka, and Mrs. Rosalie Lough, Kansas City, Mo; and two grandchildren, Shannon Cox and Danise Fisher.

The Rev. George White officiated at the Masonic services. Music was provided by Mrs. John Dollar.

Pallbearers were Everett Whitney, Wallace Whitney, Sewell Whitney, Carl Kester, Wayne Diediker, and LaVern Diediker.

Burial was in the Osawatomie Cemetery under the direction of the Birchard Funeral Home.
