MANFORD WOBKER

CLASS OF 1943 

SEPTEMBER 8, 1924 - NOVEMBER 19, 1983

A longtime Osawatomie business man, Manford Alvin Wobker, of 708 Parker Ave., died Saturday, Nov. 19, 1983, at his home. Services for Mr. Wobker, 59, were held Tuesday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home.

The son of George and Edith McKoon Wobker, he was born Sept. 8, 1924, on a farm northwest of Paola. He grew up on the family farm and attended Oak Grove Grade School and Osawatomie High School, graduating with the Class of 1943.

He entered the U. S. Army June 26, 1944, and served until April 4, 1946. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and received several decorations including two Purple Hearts and two oak-leaf clusters.

He married Verlie Carpenter Nov. 17, 1944, in Osawatomie and they became the parents of three children.

He was a mechanic and worked for the Chevrolet dealership until he opened his own business in 1959. At the time of his death, he owned and operated Wobker Motors at 649 Mai St., where he did mechanical work and bought and sold used cars.

Mr. Wobker was a member of the First Christian Church of Osawatomie.

Preceding him in death were his father, a brother Lawrence, and a grandson, Aaron.

Survivors include his wife, Verlie, of the home; his daughter, Carolyn Prothe, and two sons, Richard Wobker and Daniel Wobker, Osawatomie; his mother, Edith Brooks, Osawatomie; a brother, Roy Wobker, Paola; and three granddaughters.

The Rev. Tom Underwood conducted the services. Mary Ricketts and Dorothy Heckart sang, accompanied by Nelle Dollar, organist. Active pallbearers were Lynn Wobker, Lyle Wobker, Roy Lee Wobker,Charles Wobker, Albert Wobker, and Larry Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Steele, Dr. Ronald Protzman, Leo Bristow, Leo Day, Randy Huffman and John Bennett. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery.

Memorials were established in his name to the American Heart Association and the First Christian Church of Osawatomie.
