ROY S. WACK

WACK -- - -"Deeply regret to inform you that your son, Pfc. Roy S. Wack, U.S.M.C. died 11 of May 1945 of wounds received in action at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, in performance of his duty and service of his country. When information is received regarding burial you will be notified. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy, A. A. Vendergrift, Gen., U.S.M.C."

This telegram delivered Tuesday to Mr. & Mrs. Roy Wack of Osawatomie was the first they had even known of their son being wounded. Private Wack was nearly 20 years old, having been born June 17, 1925, at Hoisington. He graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1943 and enlisted in the Marines soon afterward.

After finishing his boot training at San Diego he was home on furlough in September 1943 and left in May 1944 for the Pacific. He served with the Sixth Marine division which took part in several major engagements, including Tinian, Guam, Saipan, Palau and Okinawa.

Private Wack is survived by his parents, a brother, Bill, and a sister, Barbara, of the home. Mr. Wack is chief clerk to the master mechanic of the Missouri Pacific shops.
