HAYES LAVERNE MARTIN

Hayes LaVerne Martin, 79, Louisburg, longtime LaCygne resident and native of Osawatomie, died Friday, June 3, 2005, in Louisburg Care Center.

The son of Hazle Leroy and Gertrude Benton Martin, he was born June 24, 1925 in Osawatomie. He attended schools in Osawatomie graduating with the Class of 1943. He and Ida Elizabeth Sullivan were married Aug. 12, 1954 in Paola.

Mr. Martin worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for many years and retired as foreman in March 1989.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U. S. Army.

He was active in the LaCygne community serving on the LaCygne City Council and also as mayor of LaCygne for two terms. He had also served as fire chief.

His memberships included the Victory Lodge No. 104 in Osawatomie where he had held the position of grand master and of the Master Angler Association. He attended the Calvary Baptist Church in LaCygne.

Those preceding him in death were his wife, who died Jan. 22, 2003, and two brothers, John Martin and Otis Martin.

Survivors include four stepchildren, Earnesteen Bracy of Olathe, Clifford Boyd of LaCygne, Nathan Boyd of Indianapolis, Ind., and Tom York of Louisburg; a sister, Hazel Wilhoite of Paola; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Calvary Baptist Church, followed by burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery both in LaCygne. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday until service time in the church.
