ROY MARTIN BEETS

CLASS OF 1942

Roy Marvin Beets, 73, longtime resident of the Green Valley community west of Osawatomie, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, near his home.

He was born May 1, 1924, in Pressonville, Kan., the third of six children of Clyde Joseph and Edith Vivian Edgell Beets.

He attended the Green Valley country schools and graduated from Osawatomie High School in the Class of 1942.

He was married Oct. 11, 1942, in the Green Valley community to Inez Gertrude Fields. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of three children. The family moved to the farm in 1952.

He was in the United States Army during World War H, serving from June 11,1944, until February 1946. He served in the Philippine Islands, Okinawa, Korea and the South Pacific.

Mr. Beets then worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad from 1948 to 1967. After that, he farmed and raised Limousin cattle.

He was a member of the Green Valley Baptist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Osawatomie.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Pauline Caylor.

Surviving are his wife, Inez Beets of the home; two sons, Duane Beets of Osawatomie and Philip Beets of Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Janet Dunaway of Topeka; two brothers, Edward Beets of Ottawa and Donald Beets of Letchworth Herts, England; two sisters, Lola Beets of Rantoul and Geraldine Minnis of Mountain City, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services were at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. The Rev. Richard Landess officiated. Musical selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again."

Burial was in the Green Valley Cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert Kitchen, Harold Cartwright, Alvin Hall, Frank Savage, Gerald Hall and Vernon Bartlett. Members of Hanlin-Kelly VFW conducted military graveside services.
