VEDA McDOWELL WHITEHURST

Ardmore, OK — A memorial service and celebration of life for Veda Mae Whitehurst is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, in the Craddock Memorial Chapel.

Veda was born March 16, 1923, in Osawatomie, Kan. She died peacefully Sept. 28, 2009. She and Alfred C. Whitehurst were married on Aug. 14, 1943, in Wichita, Kan.

They had a long and happy life together where she worked side-by-side with him at their local bait and tackle business for many years. Veda enjoyed greeting the customers and talking to the many friends that would often stop by to chat with them. She called everyone, “sugar or honey”.

Veda loved to travel and go places. She loved to read books and the National Geographic magazine. Her favorite things to do were dining out having Mexican food and attending antique auctions looking for treasures.

Veda loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never missed a birthday. She was an incredibly loving parent and grandparent and will be missed by all of her family and friends.

She is survived by her four children, Jane Stevens, Barbara Vick and her husband A.D. and Mary Louise Hieronymus and her husband Robert, all of Ardmore and Michael Whitehurst of Dallas; her sister, Wanda Hazen of Lansing, Kan.; her brother, Everett McDowell of Ardmore; seven grandchildren, Carrie Herrera Zala of Denton, Texas, Melissa Wilbourn of Sand Springs, Okla., Jenifer Herrera Shay of Vail, Colo., Amy Hudson of Wichita, Kan., Elizabeth Miller of Smith Station, Ala., Rebecca Hayes of Summerville, Ala. and Celia Roberts of Houston; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred C. Whitehurst.
