WILLIAM NOLAN CASTO

CLASS OF 1940

SEPTEMBER 3, 1922 - JULY 28, 1985

The following information was submitted by William's daughter, Kimberly Casto McCaskill of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina:

William Nolan Casto graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1940. He served in the US Army during World War II, doing most of his tour of duty in France. I am in the process of verifying information that he may have been involved in the Normandy Invasion during World War II.

He was honorably discharged from the US Army after one tour of duty. After returning to the United States, he put himself through college at Kansas State in Lawrence, Kansas. He met his wife, Yvonne Gilchrist Casto in November 1958 while in Kansas City. They married in Kansas City on May 30, 1959.

His ambition was to be an industrial engineer with the space program. After his graduation he was employed at Boeing, McDonnell Douglas Aircraft and then was able to obtain his dream of working as an industrial engineer. He took several public speaking courses and developed an interest in teaching Dale Carnegie courses. He along with his coworkers taught several Dale Carnegie courses to inmates at Fort Leavenworth prison during the time he resided in Kansas. He later worked on several contracts with the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) at several locations in the United States including: New Orleans, Louisiana, California, etc.

He and my Mom had one daughter, me, on January 11,1962 while living in Palo Alto, California.

Dad worked for several years on numerous contracts for NASA, and then became very ill. Our family relocated to North Carolina where he received treatment at Duke University and University of North Carolina Hospitals. He was later diagnosed with Huntingtons Chorea. He fought this disease courageously for 20 years and died at 62 years of age at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salisbury, North Carolina. He is interred at Westview Memorial Cemetary in Lillington, North Carolina. My Mother, Yvonne G. Casto still resides on the family farm in Lillington, North Carolina.

I am married and work for the State of North Carolina and reside outside of Raleigh, North Carolina.

I hope this additional information regarding my Dad is helpful. He was a really neat guy who accomplished alot in a short period of time.
