1909 OHS Yearbook

athletics

The past year has been prosperous for Athletics in the Osawatomie High School, although the number of match games played have been few and those won fewer, Athletics of all kinds are encouraged by the Board of Education and the Faculty because they believe that in an all-around development attention must be given to making the body strong and vigorous in order that the mind have a suitable place in which to work and through which to work. There has been an effort to make High School athletics strictly school athletics and all teams this year have been organized on this basis.

ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The Athletic Association was organized to unify and encourage athletics. According to the constitution the Superintendent or Principal is president of the association and all athletics are under his direction.

Sections are formed for each of the various parts and the members of each section elect their own manager and captain. During the past year the Athletic Associatio has furnished the dressing room with lockers and a shower bath.

FOOTBALL

Immediately after the opening of school in the fall of 1908, the football section organized with Claude McConnell as manager and Ernest Bundy as captain. The captain of the team was the only man on the team who had ever played before, but out of this new material, he organized a snappy team. Although the team was very light and inexperienced, it was strictly a school team and it gave a good account of itself in the few games played. The games and scares are as follows:

Osawatomie is the only team in Eastern Kansas to score against Louisburg this year.

The boys who played on the team this year received valuable physical development if not a large number of victories and they are confident that with the year's experience they can give a better account of themselves next year.

BASKETBALL

Basketball has been confined to the girls this year and they have had much sport and exercise out of their practice. They organized early in the year with Florence Barnard as manager and Lucille Doyle as captain. Since the basketball court is an outdoor court, the practices could not be continued all year, but one game was played with Louisburg.

BASEBALL

The baseball section organized with Lafe Woodruff as manager and Glenn Shawyer as captain. The team was greatly handicapped because it was short a pitcher, and after two defeats attention was turned to track work.

TRACK

The Osawatomie High School is better equipped for track and field work than any school in the county. It has a fine one-eighth mile track and the usual field equipment such as hammer, shot, pole, standards, etc. The section is organized with Walter Adair as manager and Irl Michaels as captain.

Interest has been aroused by the fact that before the close of school there will be a contest between the Senior-Sophomore and Junior-Freshmen classes for a pennant which was won two years ago by the Junior-Freshmen classes and is now held b those classes.

TENNIS

Kenneth Uhls is manager of the tennis section and Warren Stokes is captain. A good court has been made and it is planned to have a tournament between the Senior-Sophomore and Junior-Freshmen classes before school closes.
