1921 OHS Yearbook

~ Faculty ~

The O.H.S. seems to have had all the luck going this year, judging by the efficient teachers they were fortunate in securing. We are glad that most of our present faculty will be with us next year, so we are looking ahead for another successful year. the following teachers will be with us again next year: supt. Axton, Miss Alice Reid, Miss Marie Power, Miss Lavina Leibengood, Miss Emma Skinner, and Mr. Julius Kiefer. Miss Oma Pulliam and Mr. LaRue Carr are undecided as to what they will do next year. We wish each a successful year.

COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT

The subjects offered in this department are: Commercial Arithmetic (1st semester), commercial Law (2nd semester), of first year. Bookkeeping, second year. Beginning Typewriting and Shorthand, third year, and Advanced Typewriting and Shorthand in the fourth year. This course provides splendid supplementary training for a business college course. Miss Oma Pulliam, who has charge of this department has awarded her beginning typewriting pupils, who have attained a speed of forty words per minute, an Efficiency certificate. This is quite an incentive to the beginners, and has helped to make this year successful for this department.

DOMESTIC SCIENCE AND ART DEPARTMENT

In this department, the pupils are taught sewing and cooking. Every girl should take this course. Miss Lavina Leibengood, supervisor of this department, has taken her class on several tours this term. They visited the City Laundry, and the Graphic office. They also made a trip to Kansas city, where they visited the Armour Packing Co., National Biscuit Co, and other interesting places.

MANUAL TRAINING DEPARTMENT

This department is well equipped and has had a good instructor this year. The boys have made numerous pieces of furniture, and have also completed the necessary number of mechanical drawings.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

The curriculum offers four years of English; three years are required and the fourth year is elective. Miss Emma Skinner has had charge of this department. A literary society has been formed in each class and one hour is taken each week for the discussion of current literary events. This is an excellent way to interest the pupils and advance the English work. The fourth year class study journalism, and have edited the O.H.S. weekly paper, "The Cardinal."

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

Miss Marie Power has proven a very efficient and capable instructor for this department. Credits are required in all subjects of this department.

NORMAL TRAINING DEPARTMENT

The object of this department is to furnish better and more efficient teachers, especially for the rural schools. The subjects required under this course are one year each of Agriculture, Civics, American History, Physics, and Reviews (which consists of twelve weeks each of Geography, Reading, Grammar); one-half year is required of Psychology and Methods and Management. Miss Alice Reid, the Normal Training instructor has helped the girls taking this course in numerous ways. One great help to them has been the two half-days per week for observation and practice teaching.

HISTORY AND SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

Three years of history - Ancient, Modern and American History are offered in our curriculum. Mr. LaRue Carr has had charge of Agriculture as well as the history. "Magazine Day," when one period was devoted to the study of current history, has added greatly to the interest in the work. Mr. Axton, Physics instructor has made that class extremely interesting by much Laboratory work. Many interesting experiments were performed and a variety of subjects studied.
