ERNEST BUNDY, WARREN
STOKES, WALTER ADAIR, MR. LEE In the year '08, a
band of eight girls under the leadership of Mr. York, formed
themselves into a Ladies' Double Quartette, practicing
incessantly on two songs and rendering these two songs in
public on several occasions. Pangs of jealousy
were aroused in the hearts of some of the boys at the glory
and renown these girls were receiving. But nothing came of
it for that year. This Ladies' Double
Quartette was not re-organized this year, probably from lack
of energy to learn two more songs, as the previous two were
known by heart by the public. No so with the
boys. A new member entered
the Senior Class from the Baldwin Academy with quite a
knowledge of football, a fairly good bass voice, and little
else. Immediately a male
quartette was organized for the purpose of singing in chapel
and maybe organizing a Glee Club and going out on the
road. Finally a selection
was decided upon mainly because a member had five copies of
it. "Good Night, Ladies"
was chosen for an encore, for surely one would be
needed. The eventful day
came. Every member of the quartette was sure of his part --
for did he not already feel himself a renowned
vocalist? But "pride goeth
before a fall" -- none could sound the right not at the
right time. But the untutored
ears of their listeners perceived it not for they cheered
quite lustily, so much so, in fact, that the redoubtable
four dared to leave their seats again. Mr. McCune
apparently to put an end to the rude applause which had
occurred after the first song stepped to the front and
begged the audience to "think how it sounds down below!" Of
course, all laughed at the quartette. But "e who laughs last
laughs best." Revenge sweet and
deep lay in the power of the quartette for they had yet
another song to sing. At last it
ended and the quartette took their seats in the midst of
profound silence which was only broken by Mr. McCune's gasp
--"Monitors, please.
