James Joseph Murphy, 19, of Osawatomie died June 13, 1971, at the Lawrence Memorial hospital. An autopsy was performed to determine the cause of death. He was born May 11, 1952, in Garnett, the only child of James Joseph and Clarice Murphy.

James graduated from Osawatomie high school in 1970 and was a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist that year. He attended Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia and was presently employed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Osawatomie. He was a member of the St. Philip Neri church in Osawatomie.

Survivors are his parents of the home and maternal grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. J. H. Vincent, of Pittsburg.

Funeral services were held in the St. Philip Neri church Wednesday morning with Father Joseph Staudinger, O.S.B., officiating. The rosary was recited Tuesday evening in the Birchard chapel. Pallbearers were Frank Barnes, Rick Plummer, Pat Sanders, Steve Wilkins, Mike Goodwin and Phillip Cragg. Burial was in the Osawatomie cemetery under the direction of the Birchard Funeral home.
