RONALD B. HUGHES

CLASS OF 1959 

AUGUST 2, 1940 - DECEMBER 21, 1997

Services for Ronald Benjamin Hughes, Spring Hill, were held Dec. 24 in St. Philip Neri Catholic Church.

Mr. Hughes, 57, died of injuries suffered in a one-vehicle accident Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997 in northwest Miami County.

He was born Aug. 2, 1940 in Wichita, the son of Benjamin F. and Maxine J. Odor Hughes. The family moved to Osawatomie in 1951.

Mr. Hughes attended local schools and was a 1959 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

He moved to Kansas City and began working for Yellow Freight, a position that was to end in his retirement in 1986 with 27 years of sevice. For several years, he continued his education by taking night classes at Rockhurst College. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve in the early 1960s.

After his retirement, he worked as a self-employed mechanic. Six months ago, he went to work for the Mike Miller Construction Co.

His memberships included the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church of Osawatomie and the International Union of Operating Engineers, Hoisting and Portable Local No 101 of Kansas City, Mo.

Among those preceding him in death was a brother.

Survivors include his father of Osawatomie and six brothers, Robert Hughes and Louis Hughes, Osawatomie, Richard Hughes, Olathe, James Hughes, Edwardsville, Donald Hughes, Spring Hill, and Thomas Hughes, Hillsdale.

The Rev. Joseph Cramer officiated. Music was provided by Carol Walker and Ruth Elliott. Pallbearers were Mike Spanior, Mike Reeves, Roy Clevers, Wayne Gabbert, Rusty Cornett, and Donnie Mattson. Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Reymolds, John Myers, Gary Bridgeford and C. I. Johnson. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery. Arrangement were under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home.
