Judith (Matney) Barrett, age 70, of rural Parker, Kansas died May 14, 2007 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri.

Judy was born March 10, 1937 at Osawatomie, Kansas. She was the daughter of Howard and Lola (Manchester) Matney. She grew up and attended school in Osawatomie graduating with the Class of 1955. She served as class secretary for many years.

Judy was united in marriage to Eldon Barrett on February 22, 1956 in the Methodist Church at Osawatomie. They made their home for a short time in Osawatomie and then moved to their current home at rural Parker, Kansas in 1962. She and Eldon became the parents of three children.

Judy began working at the Osawatomie State Hospital in July of 1955. She worked as a clerk typist initially, then a clerk stenographer, then a secretary, and later became an office supervisor. She retired on November 18, 1992.

She was a member of the Beagle United Methodist Church where she had held the office of secretary for many years. She was also a member of the church board and the United Methodist Women.

Judy enjoyed gardening and canning. She liked to share her fresh garden vegetables and canned goods with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Ronald Matney.

She is survived by her husband Eldon of the home; two sons Dennis and his wife Karen of rural Osawatomie and Doug and his wife Susan of Parker; one daughter Melissa Gillette and her husband Rick of Shawnee, Kansas; one brother Fred Matney of Osawatomie; three sisters Rilda Bingaman of Osawatomie, Phyllis Maxwell of Wichita, and Mary Etta Markham of Erie, Kansas; her step-mother Eula Matney Wollard; six grandchildren Tim, Randy, Heather, Charlene, Brendan, and Bradley; two great grandchildren Jastin and Kinsley and Judy was anticipating the arrival of her third great grandchild in August.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 18, 2007 at the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. She will lie in state after 1 p.m. on Thursday with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Beagle Cemetery. Memorials are to the American Heart Association or the Kansas City Hospice House.
