CHARLES RICHARD KELLOGG

 

 CLASS OF 1955

Charles Richard Kellogg, 76, Rich Hill, Mo., died Aug. 23, 2014, after a short battle with cancer.

Charles was born in Osawatomie on Nov. 10, 1937, to James Elmer and Amelia Josephine Capelle Kellogg.

He graduated in 1955 from Osawatomie High School where he developed his love for the game of basketball.

After graduation Charles went to work for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City where he met his wife Karen. To this union, two children were born: Scott Allen Kellogg and Jacqueline Kay Kellogg.

In 1960, he joined the Naval Reserve and served during the Cuban missile crisis. After returning home, he served as a firefighter in Shawnee Mission.

After moving his family back to Osawatomie, he made the decision to continue his education to become a teacher/coach. He received his associate’s degree from Fort Scott Community College where he helped coach the 1970 NJCAA Championship football team and the 1971 NJCAA National Runner-up football team. This earned him a place in the FSCC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.

He then attended Pittsburg State University where he earned his BS in physical education.

Upon being hired by the Rich Hill R-IV School District in 1973 as the new PE teacher and head basketball coach, he moved his family to Rich Hill. He taught and coached football, basketball and track for 25 years, retiring in 1998. This did not end his career with the Rich Hill School District. He was involved with the school until the time of his death. This involvement included being the part-time ISD teacher, helped coach, member of the booster club, serving on the school board and watching his grandchildren participate in various sports. His teams, students, children and grandchildren meant the world to him.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, James Kellogg and Amelia Kellogg Bussel; sister, Katherine Josephine Kellogg; two brothers, Edward Everett Kellogg and Jules Elmer Kellogg; father-in-law, Donald Laverne Polley; and two nephews, Dale Kellogg and James Kellogg.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Irene Polley Kellogg of the home; son, Scott Allen Kellogg of El Dorado, Kan.; daughter, Jacqueline Kay Duncan of Rich Hill; four grandchildren: Christopher Scott Kellogg of Portland, Ore., Jackson Charles Duncan of Rich Hill, Charles Richard Kellogg of El Dorado, and Serena Margaret Duncan of Rich Hill; sister-in-law, Mildread Polley Leveridge of Irving, Texas; nieces: Katherine Renee Kellogg, Nancy Bertone Clark, Shane Leveridge Burton-Simpson; nephews: Jon Kellogg, James Kellogg, Tony Bertone, Shawn Leveridge, Steve Bertone; and numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Service is at 10 a.m. Aug. 27 at Heuser Funeral Home, Rich Hill, (417) 395-2213. Military rites by Post 67, Rich Hill. Burial will be in Osawatomie Cemetery.
