W. D. "DUB" BARNES

PAOLA --- Services were held Saturday morning, Aug. 5, 1995, at Wilson and Son Chapel in Paola for W.D. "Dub" Barnes, 59, of Herington, a veteran high school teacher-coach, who died Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 2, 1995, at the home of his daughter in Gardner after suffering an apparent heart attack. Darel Boston officiated.

Mr. Barnes, who lived in Herington more than 30 years, was born June 18, 1936, in Paola, the son of Glenn and Waneta Barnes.

He was a 1954 graduate of Osawatomie High School. He graduated from Coffeyville Junior College and received a bachelor's degree and master's degree from Emporia State Teachers College.

From 1959 to 1961, he was a teacher and coach at Wellsville. He then served three years as a teacher and coach at Parker before moving to Herington.

He served on the Herington High School faculty from 1964 to 1971 and was on the school's coaching staff. He served as head basketball coach at HHS for seven years. His 1965-66 varsity basketball team enjoyed a 20-2 season and his 1966-67 team went 18-6 and qualified for the post-season state tournament.

After later working more than five years for the Rock Island Railroad, he returned to the education field. He taught and coached at Herington High, Lansing High, Centre High (Lost Springs) and Hartford High between 1976 and 1985.

About 15 years ago, Mr. Barnes established an auctioneering ervice. He was editor of the Kansas Sunflower Auctioneer Magazine. He continued to serve as a substitute teacher in recent years.

He was married to Ruth Prothe on Nov. 27, 1954, in the Block community near Paola. She survives.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Other survivors include three daughters, Brenda Bluma of Burlington, Glenda Johnston of Gardner, and Lynda Sader of Wichita; a sister, Shirley Spears, Osawatomie; and five grandchildren.

Burial was in the Paola Cemetery.
