Services for Richard Wayne Goldsmith, Sylmar, Calif. were held Tuesday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home.

Mr. Goldsmith, a former resident of Osawatomie, died Monday, Sept. 26, 1994 at his home. He was 61.

Born Oct. 26, 1932 in Osawatomie, he was the son of James Orville and Dorothy Oletha VanHorn Goldsmith. He grew up in Osawatomie, attended local schools and was a 1951 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

He went to work for General Motors at Van Nuys, Calif., and worked there 10 years. He enlisted in the U. S. Army and served from 1953 until 1955 during the Korean War. A year of his service time was spent in Germany.

In 1961, he went to work for the U. S. Postal Service at Van Nuys, Calif. He began selling real estate part time during the 1960s. He worked at the post office for 33 years and quit work in May due to failing health.

He was married to Phyllis Quirk Walker on Feb. 16, 1968, at San Fernando, Calif. They became the parents of a daughter. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1979.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Vay Nuys and the Postal Union.

His father preceded him in death.

Those surviving are his mother, Dorothy Goldsmith of Osawatomie; his daughter, Jenny Louise Goldsmith of Australia; a brother, James Goldsmith of Sylmar, Calif.; and two sisters, Shirley Prothe and Dottie Goldsmith, both of Osawatomie.

The Rev. Lee Wiersma conducted the services. Taped selections of "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden" were played. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 921 conducted services at the funeral. Pallbearers were Jim Gilchrist, Jim Stringham, Eldon McDowell, Howard Goodeyon, Sam Conrad and Charles Crum. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery.
