BERNARD CORTNER

OCTOBER 15, 1933 - JANUARY 23, 1997

Memorial Services for Bernard Edmun Cortner, Yreka, CA, were held in Girdner Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Cortner, 63, died at his home January 23, 1997 of natural causes.

He was born Oct. 15, 1933 and his parents were Wheeler and Pearl Cortner. He grew up in Osawatomie, KS and was a 1951 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

Mr. Cortner served with the U.S.Army from 1953 to 1955 and with the Army Reserve in 1961. He was the recipient, among other awards, of the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service medal and National Defense Medal.

After his military service, he attended Florida State University where he earned a graduate professional certificate and a master's degree in social work.

In 1968 he moved to Ukiah, CA where he worked as a psychiatric social worker for the Mendocino State Hospital. In 1971 he moved to Yreka where he worked for the Siskiyou County Health Department until retiring in 1984.

He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge in Yreka.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Griswold, Elmire, OR, Denis Pepper, Paytown, MO, and Dianne Hovatter of Missouri; a son, Matthew Cortner, Sacramento, CA; two brothers, Harold Cortner, San Antonio, TX and W. E. Cortner, Blue Mound, KS.
