Eleanor Joy Brooks, 67, Osawatomie, died Wednesday, July 25,2001, in Specialty Hospital, a part of the Overland Park Regional Medical Center, after an extended illness.

She was born Jan. 5,1934, in Fontana, a daughter of Clifford J. and Stella M. Henness Ray. She attended Osawatomie schools and was a 1950 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

She and Wayne Brooks were married June 13, 1953. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of two daughters. They were divorced in June 1979.

She worked as a seamstress for Mode 0' Day, had worked as a manager at the Pizza Hut and as a clerk in the Sheehan and McKinney Liquor Store, Sinclair Pharmacy and Auten Pharmacy, all in Osawatomie.

She attended church at the First Christian Church of Osawatomie and the United Methodist Church of Beagle. She was a member of Osawatomie Chapter No. 26, Order of the Eastern Star, and served as grand worthy matron in 1978.

One of her favorite pastimes was reading romance novels. She also enjoyed baking and sharing her famous snickerdoodle cookies.

Mrs. Brooks was one of the first official score keepers for T-ball in Osawatomie and coached softball, along with Willie Hinton, when her two daughters were playing. Most of all, she enjoyed her grandchildren.

Those preceding her in death include a daughter, Laurie Johnston, who died in December 1991.

Survivors include her daughter, Becky Davey of Osawatomie; two brothers, Ralph Ray of Osawatomie and J.W. Ray of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two sisters, Lorene Ricketts of Osawatomie and Irene Meinig of Paola and seven grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery. Pallbearers were Stan Eichorn, Lloyd McCrea, Jim Jenkins, Darrell Ashmore and Larry Schull. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Sinclair, Ralph Ray, J.W. Ray, Mike Sheehan, Brad Leach, Raymond Baughman and Don Meinig.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Kidney Foundation.
