Services for Eugene J. "Sonny" O'Brien, Jr., 836 S. Cherry, Ottawa, were held Monday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home.

Mr. O'Brien, 60, died Friday, August 6, 1993, in Ransom Memorial Hospital.

He was born August 2, 1933 in Osawatomie and his parents were Eugene and Margaret Caroll O'Brien. He grew up in the Osawatomie area and was a 1950 graduate of Osawatomie High School. He lived in Wellsville from 1962 until moving to Ottawa six years ago.

He was a machinist for Kansas City Power and Light Co. He was a United State Army veteran of the Korean War.

His first wife, Bonnie Hobert, died in 1987.

He and Wanda Spegal were married June 18, 1988 in Ottawa.

His memberships included Victory Baptist Church and Hanlin-Kelly Post No. 2258 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Osawatomie.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda, of the home; a daughter, Renea Lamberd, Wellsville; a step-daughter, Terri Wilhelm, Sparks, NV; two stepsons, Randy Fouts, Wellsville, and William Robert Mertell, Decatur, IL; his father, Eugene O'Brien, Sr., Osawatomie; two sisters, Kay Benedict and Connie Butler, Osawatomie; two grandchildren and six step grandchildren.

The Rev. Glenn Layton, Jr. officiated. Pallbearers were Kenneth Benedict, Dwight Butler, Bill Butler, Lester Langewisch, Richard Lamberd and Kelly Benedict. Burial was in Wellsville Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in his name to the Crippled Children's Hospital in Independence, MO.
