Services for Catherine E. Howell, 1710 Lockhart Lane, Osawatomie, were held Thursday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home.

Mrs. Howell, 72, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1993, in Olathe Medical Center.

The daughter of Joseph Edgar and Clara Bell Mohler Hatfield, she was born June 5, 1921, in Osawatomie. She received her education in Osawatomie schools and was a 1939 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

On July 30, 1939, she and Lawrence Edwin Howell were married in Fort Scott. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of five children.

She had worked as a seamstress for Mode O'Day in Osawatomie and Smith's Garment Factory in Paola. She had also been employed as a cook at Heritage Manor and Osawatomie High School. Her retirement came in 1986.

Her memberships include the First United Methodist Church of Osawatomie and International Ladies Garment Workers Union. Mrs. Howell was also active in the Miami County Foster Grandparent Program for several years.

Among those preceding her in death was her husband, Lawrence; two brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include four sons, Fred Howell, Irving, Texas, Tom Howell, Olathe, Bruce Howell, Omaha, Neb., and Eric Howell, Osawatomie; a daughter, Barbara Howell, Littleton, Colo.; a sister, Marjorie Taylor, Coffeyville; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The Rev. Ted Hunter officiated. Pallbearers were Larry Young, Dale Koontz, Jody Kern, Dick Miller, Larry Law and Fred Hatfield. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa.

A memorial has been established in her name to the Miami County Foster Grandparent Program.
