James Howard Giles, 86, Basehor, Kan., an Osawatomie native, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006.

He was born June 12, 1920, in Osawatomie, the son of Robert and Ruth Sandborg Giles. He was a 1939 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Feb. 9, 1942, and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He and Ruth Davidson were married in 1947, and they shared 50 years together before she died in 1997.

Mr. Giles retired from Deffenbaugh Industries as a welder.

He was a member of the Basehor Post No. 11499 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Others preceding him in death were four siblings.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeane Haney of Basehor; three granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were Thursday in the Glenwood Cemetery near Basehor.
