CLASS OF 1939 d. DECEMBER 2, 2000 Ruth Geraldine "Gerry" Webster of West Hartford, Conn., died on Saturday, December 2, 2000 after a long illness. She was born in Kansas, the daughter of Howard and Helen Davies, long time owners of the City Laundry in Osawatomie, Kansas. She had been a resident of West Hartford since 1955. Geraldine graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1939. She attended college in Kansas where she majored in music and later studied pipe organ while she was employed by Braniff Airlines. She was the organist at Covenant Congregational Church for five years and at the Blue Hills Baptist Church for ten years after which she substituted as organist at 40 different churches in the greater Hartford area. She taught at the West Hartford Nursery School for ten years and had the pleasure of seeing many of her students grow into adulthood. After her own surgeries Gerry served as a volunteer for the Cancer Society's Reach for Recovery Program for many years during which she called on over 200 mastectomy patients. In addition to her membership in The Cancer Society she was active in the Asylum Hill Congregational Church, Chapter D of the PEO Sisterhood, The Antique Appreciation Group and had belonged to The American Guild of Organists, The Town & Country Club, and the All Seasons Garden Club. Gerry leaves her husband of 54 years, Wayne Webster, two sons, Warren Webster of Woodstock GA and Wendell Webster with her two grandchildren Casey and Courtney of West Hartford. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dean Davies, an Osawatomie graduate in 1942. A memorial service was held on December 5 at the Asylum Hill Congregational Church. Burial was private at the convenience of the family with arrangements cared for by Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home in West Hartford. |
