GLADYS SUDDARTH BUCHANAN

 

CLASS OF 1938

The funeral for Gladys “Kewpie” Price Buchanan, Huntington Beach, CA were held Saturday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home. Mrs. Buchanan, 78 died Tuesday July 14, 1998 in Pacifica Hospital in Huntington Beach. 

The daughter of Lowell Herbert and Elsie Mae Hoffman Suddarth, she was born July 11, 1920 in Osawatomie. She grew up in Osawatomie, attended local schools and was a 1938 graduate of Osawatomie High school. On July 30, 1939, she and John Harold Buchanan were married in Tulsa, OK. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of two children. 

In 1963 they moved to Pueblo, CO and then in 1968, Coffeyville became their home. After his death Jan 4, 1979, she remained in Coffeybille until 1986. At that time, she moved to California to be near her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Buchanan was a member of the First Christian Church of Pueblo. 

Survivors include a son, Richard Buchanan, with whom she had lived in Huntington Beach; a daughter, Patty Mason, Apple Valley, CA; a sister, Dorothy Hicks, Osawatomie; and three grandsons. The Rev. Rex Heavin officiated. Music was provided by Julie Weaver, organist, and Jean Smith and Nancy Snyder, soloists. Pallbearers were Larry White, Terry Anderson, Chuck Hampton, Ron Callahan, Kevin Buchanan and David Waggoner. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Miami County Humane Society.
