DERWOOD F. JOHNS

CLASS OF 1938

FEBRUARY 10, 1920 - SEPTEMBER 19, 1982

Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the United Methodist Church in Osawatomie for Derwood Franklin Johns, 62, who died unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 19, 1982 in the emergency room at the Miami County Hospital after a massive heart attack.

Dr. Alan B. Smith officiated at the service. "In The Garden" and "Until We Meet Again" were sung by Mrs. Sue Jacobson accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Ruth Smith.

Burial was in the Osawatomie Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Jesse Bolling, Randy Stoughton, Richard Earl Troxel, David Johnson, Charles Marcum, Jim Dougan, Jimmy Joe Johnson and Leslie Bolling. Service were under the direction of the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home of Osawatomie.

Memorials were established in his name to the church of which he was a member.

Jack, as he was known, was born Feb. 10, 1920, in Osawatomie, the second of eight children of James and Millie Sharp Johns. He graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1938.

For about a year he worked for the Attebery Station and Store. October 14, 1940, he enlisted in the U. S. Army. During World War II he spent five years in military service attaining the rank of Tech Sergeant. He served with the 320th Infantry Cannon Company, serving in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland and the Ardennes.

He served as platoon sergeant while in England, France, Luxembourg, Holland, Belgium and Germany. Mr. Johns led a cannon platoon, relayed orders, made inspections of personnel and equipment and related civilian occupation loading. He was discharged Oct. 17, 1945.

Sept. 8, 1947, in Ottawa, Ill., he was married to Edith Maxine Bigham. They moved back to the Osawatomie area that year. Mr. Johnson worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for nine years as a painter. After the shop closed he worked for Delco Battery in Olathe as battery trimmer for 14 years. His health failed and he was forced to retire in 1972.

Mr. Johns enjoyed all types of sports, especially fishing. In his younger days he played baseball.

Preceding him in death was his father, a daughter, Mrs. Jane Ann Burgoon, and a sister, Mrs. Fayetta Peabody.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Edith Johns on the home in Osawatomie; two sons, Jack David Johns of Osawatomie and Jim Bob Johns of rural Paola; a daughter, Mrs. Jeanne Faye Bootsma, rural Paola; his mother, Mrs. Millie Johns of Osawatomie; two brothers, A. L. Johns of Osawatomie, and James Johns of Olathe; four sisters, Mrs. Eileen Troxel of Bolckow, Mo., Mrs. Helen Johnson of DeSoto, Mrs. Marjorie Stoner of Olathe, and Mrs. Veronica Miller of Paola, and five grandchildren.
