Flora Belle Piggott, 76, rural Osawatomie, died Thursday, April 10, 1997 at Miami County Medical Center in Paola.

She was born April 13, 1920 on the family farm south of Osawatomie, the daughter of James Polk and Anna Ranney Mullins.

She attended the Osawatomie schools and graduated from Osawatomie High School with the Class of 1937. She worked at Osawatomie State Hospital for two years and then attended Ursuline Academy in Paola before enrolling in St. Luke's School of Nursing in Kansas City, Mo.

She graduated in 1944 with a nursing degree. She served with the Army Nurses Corps during World War II in Baltimore, MD. And Leavenworth.

She was married to Sherman Lee Piggott at Ottawa on Dec. 15, 1945. They became the parents of a daughter. They lived on farms south of Osawatomie. He preceded her in death March 31, 1982.

In February 1952 Mrs. Piggott went back to work at the state hospital where she was a psychiatric nurse and nursing instructor for many years. She retired in October 1973.

Others preceding her in death were her parents, a brother and a sister.

Those surviving are her daughter, Annie Bowersox of Baldwin City, a brother, three sisters; and two grandchildren.

A visitation was from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Graveside services were at 11 a.m. today (Monday) at the Osawatomie Cemetery.
