Velma Lorraine Padgett Lore, 91, rural Osawatomie, died Tuesday, April 6, 2010, in Life Care Center of Osawatomie.

Born March 19, 1919, in Ozawkie, Kan., she was the oldest of the 14 children of Kelsey Lee and Elsie Melinda Metzger Miller. Her family moved to Osawatomie when she was in grade school. She attended school at Ozawkie, Oskaloosa, Crescent Hill Country School south of Osawatomie and graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1937.

She married Earl Franklin Padgett in La Cygne in 1938. They made their home on Retan Street in Osawatomie and became the parents of four children. Mr. Padgett died in 1970.

She later married Loren Nesselroad. He died in 1987.

Mrs. Lore worked at the Osawatomie State Hospital for eight years as a psychiatric aide. She had also worked at Lansing State Prison where she was a cook.

Her hobbies included quilting, crocheting, puzzle books and gardening.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Osawatomie.

Others preceding her in death included two sons, Michael and Donald; four brothers, Bill Miller, Bob Miller, Chuck Miller and Harry Miller; a sister, Betty Lyons; and one great-grandson.

Survivors include two daughters Kathryn Elwood of Osceola, Mo., and Peggy Chase of rural Paola; three brothers Glen Miller, John Miller and Larry Miller, five sisters, June McCoy and Donna, Ruth, Ina and Nina; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were Friday in Miami Memorial Gardens north of Osawatomie.
