Alice Mae Powell, 80, Osawatomie, died Tuesday, Jan 4, 2000, in Heritage Manor in Osawatomie after an extended illness.

She was born July 18, 1919 in Osawatomie, one of the five children of William D. and Ethel Surprise McClintock. She grew up in Osawatomie, attended local schools and was a 1937 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

On August 25, 1940 she and Jack Melverne Powell were married in Davenport, Iowa. They returned to Osawatomie in 1945 to make their home. They were parents of nine children. Mr. Powell died March 5, 1995.

Mrs. Powell worked in the Osawatomie school system as a cook at the high school during the 1970s. Her retirement came in 1977.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Osawatomie.

Among those preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were a son Thomas; a daughter, Judith Branch; a brother, Leslie McClintock; and two sisters, Virginia Mullins and Clara Dickerson.

Survivors include seven children, David Clark Powell of Lee's Summit, Mo., Michael Powell of Paola, William Powell and Jacquelyn Fixley, both of Olathe, Brian Powell of Springfield, Mo., Nancy Crowley of Osawatomie and Marsha Madl of Topeka; a sister, Elnora Miller of Cookville, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held Friday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Family members served as pallbearers. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery.
