CLASS OF 1936 OCTOBER 17, 1917 - MARCH 2, 1998 Chicago- -Memorial services for Jenna V. Avery, Chicago, were held March 6 in the Coppin Memorial AME Church. Mrs. Avery, a former Osawatomie, Kan. resident, died Monday, March 2, 1998. She was 80. Born Oct. 17, 1917 in Olathe, Kan. she was the daughter of Charles and Georgia Smith. She graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1936. Three years later, she moved to Chicago where she worked for the Continental Can Co. and later worked for the Kellogg Switchboard and Supply Co. Later, she earned a beautician degree from Madam C. J. Walker Beauty College. She worked as a hair stylist and beauty consultant for more than 36 years before illness forced her to retire. On Dec. 18, 1949, she and Furman Avery were married. They became the parents of one son. Mrs. Avery was a longtime member of the Coppin Memorial AME Church of Chicago where she was a class leader and member of the steward board. Survivors include her husband, Furman Sr., of the home; her son, Furman Avery Jr.; and two grandchildren. Officiating were Dr. Robert James Eckert; Dr. David Cyrus Coleman Jr. and Bishop Robert Thomas Jr. |
