EVELYN MARY SLAYMAN

 

 CLASS OF 1936

NOVEMBER 8, 1918 - APRIL 13, 2013

Everyone should be so lucky to have an Aunt Evie. Our sweet Aunt Evie passed away April 13, 2013 surrounded by loving family members. Her life was filled with family, friends, travel, volunteering, work and a love of dogs. During WWII, she joined the military as a Specialist First Class Navy Wave, where she helped break Japanese codes. While stationed in Washington, D.C., she attended a dance for Missouri service members and danced with then VP Harry S. Truman. Her professional career included serving as Executive Secretary to the President of H.D. Lee.

Evelyn was born on November 8, 1918 to John A and Ethel (Levy) Slayman. Evie was preceded in death by her siblings, John T. Slayman and Josephine Dembny. Surviving nieces and nephews include: Barbara Foster, Mary Buckley, Cecelia Witt, Jack Slayman, Bill Slayman, Mike Slayman, Pam Smith, Elaine Keogh, Chris Dembny and Lisa Richardson. Great nieces and nephews: Kyle Foster, Alison Anderson, Beth Prothe, Barb Lockwood, Kari Streeter, Aaron Eckerberg, Katie Burgess, John H Slayman, Seth Slayman, Bart Slayman, Brooke Slayman, Megan Slayman, and Emily Redden, Adam Mills, Aaron Mills, Lindsey Jorgensen, Ryan Keogh, Kate Dembny, Susan Dembny, Brad Richardson, Michael Richardson, and Ellen Richardson; great-great nieces and nephews: Kaitlyn Anderson, Ryan Holloman, Brandon Prothe, Skyler Prothe, Kayla Willis, Preston Streeter, Taylor Eckerberg, Madison Eckerberg, Jordan Burgess, Hailey Burgess, Parker Slayman, Carson Slayman, and Anson Redden; great-great-great nephew Chase Holloman.

The family wishes to thank Lucille Tutera and all of the staff at the Atriums for giving Evie a wonderful home and peace in her last days. Also thanks to her caregivers Mary, Faith, and Crystal and the Continua Hospice Group.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, April 19, 2013 at St. Philip Neri Church in Osawatomie, Kansas at 11:00am followed by graveside service. Family will receive friends at McGilley & Hoge Johnson County Memorial Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS on Thursday at 6:00pm and the rosary will be said at 7:00 pm.
