CLARENCE 'TOM' HAMMOND

OCTOBER 19, 1918 - MARCH 4, 1995

Battle Creek, Mich.- - Services for Clarence E."Tom" Hammond, Battle Creek, were March 8 in the Church of the Resurrection, followed by burial in Custer National Cemetery.

Mr. Hammond, a native of Osawatomie, Kan. died Saturday, March 4, 1995 in Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo after undergoing surgery. He was 76.

Born Oct. 19, 1918 in Osawatomie, he was the son of James and Sara Johann Hammond. After graduating from Osawatomie High School in 1936, he earned a bachelor's degree in civil and sanitary engineering from the University of Kansas in 1941.

He served with the U. S. Army during World War II and was discharged as a major. He earned a Bronze Star.

He came to Battle Creek on a W. K. Kellogg Fellowship with the Calhoun County Health Department. He was employed by Hunter Plumbing until he became a partner in January 1951 in Smith-Hamm Piping. He retired in 1984.

Mr. Hammond was active in serving the Church of the Resurrection as a vestryman. He served on many committees in his profession, was state president of the Michigan Mechanical Contractors Association and was a board member of the National Mechanical Contractors Association. He was a commissioner setting up state safety standards for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1970.

In addition, he served on the Battle Creek Township Planning Commission for 18 years and on the township zoning board of appeals.

He and Helen Mae Peters were married Sept. 27, 1942 in Flagstaff Ariz.

Survivors include his wife, Helen of the home; two sons, Thomas Hammond, Ceresco, and Dr. Richard Hammond, Twin Falls, Idaho; daughters, Alice Hammond, Athol and Jeannie Rupert, Overland Park, Kan.; a sister, Helen Lewis, Mt. Clemens; and three grandchildren.

Military services were held at graveside. Arrangements were under the direction of Shaw-Estes Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established in his name to the church and the Battle Creek Youth Orchestra.
