CLASS OF 1935 NOVEMBER 24, 1917 - FEBRUARY 19, 1994 The following is information was supplied by Dick for the 50th reunion held in 1985: "After graduation from O.H.S., I had various and sundry jobs. I served in the Army, then returned to Osawatomie where I began working for the U.S.Postal Service, and later became Postmaster. I retired in 1982, and have been enjoying life ever since. My wife, Delores, and I have one son, Scott; one daughter, Gail; and one granddaughter, Sheena." Services for Richard R. "Dick:" Tyrell, 127 14th St., Osawatomie, were held last Wednesday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home. Mr. Tyrell died Saturday, Feb. 19., 1994 in Olathe Medical Center. He was 76. He was born Nov. 24, 1917 in Osawatomie, the son of Harry Russell and Elizabeth Buchanan Tyrell. A lifelong resident of Osawatomie, he attended local schools and graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1935. He also attended Kansas State University. From July 1941 to September 1945, he served in the United States Army and was stationed in the Pacific theater. In 1949 he began working for the United States Post Service and served as postmaster in Osawatomie from 1969 until his retirement in 1982. He married Delores Breon Sept. 30, 1950 in Osawatomie. They became the parents of two children. Besides being a member of the First Christian Church, he was a life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 921, a life member of Hanlin-Kelley Post No. 2258 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, all of Osawatomie, and National Association of Postmasters. He served on the Osawatomie Public Library board for four years.; A brother, Robert, was among those preceding him in death. Survivors include his wife, Delores, of the home; his son, Scott Tyrell, Pittsburg; his daughter, Gail Wendt, rural Parker; and four grandchildren. The Rev. Rex Heavin officiated at the services. Music was provided by Rosalie Bowker, organist, and Ruth Lombard, soloist. Military services were conducted at graveside by a military unit from Fort Riley. Pallbearers were Merle Stone, Dan Peterson, Charles Brand, Ron Browning, Tom DelaCruz and Salvador DelaCruz. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Sharp, John Slayman, M. J. Lhuillier, Lloyd Trout, Wayne Henness and Melvin Henness. Burial was in Elmdale Cemetery. A memorial has been established in his name to the library. |
