JULY 15, 1915 - JANUARY 19, 1997

The following is information that was supplied by Clair for the 50th reunion held in 1985:

"After graduation from High School, I worked for the State Hospital and the railroad. In April, 1942, I entered the Army and served for 42 months in the Aleutian Islands and Europe. When I returned to the United States, I was employed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad. I retired as a conductor in May, 1980, after 40 years of employment. Marion and I have been married for 46 years. We have two children; Dan is married to Mary Ann and is a brakeman for the railroad. They have one sone Garrett Dan. Our daughter, Jo Nell, works for the American Cancer Society and lived in Oklahoma City, OK. I enjoy gardening and being with my grandchild."

 

Obituary

Services for Clair Engene Peterson, Osawatomie, were held Wednesday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home.

Mr. Peterson, a longtime Osawatomie resident and retired railroader, died Sunday, Jan 19, 1997 in the Olathe Medical Center. He was 81.

He was born July 15, 1915 in Swedeborg, Mo., the son of Charley and Harriet Isabelle Kissinger Peterson. When he was a child, the family moved to Osawatomie where he grew up and attended local schools. He graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1935. He played football all four years of high school and was the team captain and quarterback during his senior year.

Mr. Peterson began a 40-year career with the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1941. He started as a brakeman and was a conductor when he retired in 1980. His railroad career was interrupted by a 42-month tour of duty with the U. S. Army during World War II. He served in the Aleutian Islands and in Europe. After his discharge he returned to Osawatomie to make his home.

He and Marian E. Trinkle were married Sept. 16, 1939 in Rolla, Mo. They became the parents of two children.

Mr. Peterson had lived with his son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Mary Ann Peterson, and their sons the past nine months.

His memberships included the First Christian Church, Hanlin-Kelly Post No. 2258 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and John Hinkle Post No. 204 of the American Legion, all of Osawatomie, and the United Transportation Union.

Among those preceding him in death were his wife, Marian, who died in 1990; three brothers, LaVerne, Howard and Obed; and two sisters, Nellie Jane Pummill and Gladys Mayer.

Survivors, in addition to his son, include a daughter, JoNell Peterson, Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Dail Peterson, Hoisington, and three grandsons.

The Rev. Rex Heavin officiated. Ruth Elliott sang, accompanied by Shirley Troutman, organist. Pallbearers were Fred Mann, Edgar Mann, Max Servais, Mike Lombard, Aaron Gross and Jim Jenkins. Honorary pallbearers were Ronnie Cole, J. G. Shelden, L. B. Johnson, Fred Barden, Marvin Lhuillier and Charles Cortner. Military services were held at the graveside in Osawatomie Cemetery.
