GEORGE MILTON MARTIN, JR.

JULY 17, 1918 - DECEMBER 11, 1941

Sergeant George Milton Martin, Jr., son of Mr. & Mrs. George M. Martin, of Osawatomie, is the first Miami County man to lose his life in the war. He died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1941, from wounds he received at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941.

George Milton Martin, Jr., was born south of Osawatomie July 17, 1918, and was 23 years old when he met death. He attended rural school and in 1935 graduated from the Osawatomie High School. He was employed at the state hospital two years. Nov. 23, 1939, he enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Leavenworth and Nov. 27 of the same year was sent to California. Dec. 17, 1939, he sailed for Hawaii. In February of this year he was promoted to corporal and then he won another promotion to a sergeantcy. He is survived by his parents, who moved to Osawatomie when they retired from farm life; by three sisters, Mrs. Don Ricketts, Mrs. Beulah Dean and Mrs. Maurine Hanfeld, Osawatomie; and two brothers, Walter Martin of Fonana and Harry Martin of Osawatomie.

Thursday of last week Mr. & Mrs. Martin received word from the war department that their son had been wounded in action. Saturday morning they received a second message from the war department that their son had on December 11 'died of wounds received in action in defense of his country in Hawaii.' The message said there would be no action in regard to moving the body until after hostilities.
