LYMAN L. "BUS" SAWYER

CLASS OF 1933

JANUARY 9, 1913 - MAY 15, 1999

Lyman 'Bus' L. Sawyer, a former resident of Osawatomie, died Saturday May 15, 1999, at his residence in Topeka. He was 86.

Mr. Sawyer was born Jan. 9, 1913, in Atchison to Gerald and Almira (Rand) Sawyer Laskie. He grew up in Topeka and Osawatomie and graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1933.

He put himself through college as a prizefighter and was a Golden Gloves champion. Mr. Sawyer continued to fight for more than 14 years after graduating from Fort Scott Junior College.

Mr. Sawyer worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for 20 years and as a salesman for Healthmor for 35 years. He married Pauline Waggoner Nov. 25, 1960 in Topeka.

He was a member of Troop K, 114th Horse Calvary Reserve of Paola and attended the Colly Creek Congregation of the Jehovah Witnesses in Topeka.

Mr. Sawyer is survived by his wife, Pauline of Topeka; his mother, Almira Laskie of Topeka; six sons: Jay Gillenwater, Paul Gillenwater, Sean Sawyer, Michael Sawyer and Patrick Sawyer all of Topeka and Dennis Sawyer of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters: Marsha Gray of Osage Beach, Mo. and Debra Davis of Topeka; 25 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday, May 18, 1999, at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah Witnesses in Topeka. He was cremated. Arrangements were under the direction of Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka.
